Passing the NBDHE: 6 Excellent Tips to Help You Pass the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board

Posted in Articles, Dental Hygienist.

Passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam (NBDHE) is one of the biggest milestones in a dental hygiene student’s career. This exam determines if you can get licensed and become a working hygienist.

With all the pressure, you’re likely stressing out about passing.

Studying for the NBDHE isn’t like other college exams or tests. It’s meant to be difficult and tends to ignite more stress than other exams. Luckily, there are things you can do to make it less stressful.

Use these six tips to not only pass the exam but do so without pulling your teeth out.

1. Use All Study Materials

Collect all your class notes, PowerPoint slides, lab notes, and textbooks. You want to use every resource you have to prepare for this exam.

There are additional resources you can pursue for even more information. Look for dental hygiene study apps, video lectures, and seminars to attend.

Skipping a notebook could result in not knowing the answer to a key question on the exam.

2. Strategize Your Studying

Do you study best in the morning or at night? In your bedroom or at a café? Assess your best studying environment and schedule it.

It’s easier to memorize and think critically when you’re well-rested and fed.

For the months leading to your exam, make sure you’re getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night and eating lots of brain-healthy foods.

3. Learn About the Exam

You can reduce your stress levels by knowing what to expect. The NBDHE creates an exam guide each year for students to read.

It will go over the different components of the exam, the topics covered, and the length of time you get to write it.

When you know what to expect, you can prepare better. You’ll know which topics to prioritize your studying on.

4. Teach Your Peers

An excellent way to ingrain class information into your memory is by teaching it to others. The act of explaining a concept forces you to think about it from different angles.

Try explaining your study points to family or friends. You could also teach it to your fellow classmates and have them teach you other points.

5. Attend Office Hours

Your teachers have specific hours they’re available to help answer questions. Take advantage of these scheduled hours to clarify any content you don’t understand.

Sometimes, having someone explain a concept in person is better than reading about it.

6. Prepare 24-Hours Pre-Exam

Your exam day preparation starts the night before. When you put away your books for the day, relax your body. Take a warm shower and get a full night of rest.

In the morning, avoid stress studying and cramming. Forgetting answers will make you panic and stress study even harder.

Instead, eat a healthy breakfast and practice calming your nerves. Go for a walk, meditate, and go write the exam.
