Why Post-Secondary Career Fairs Matter

Posted in Articles.

Choosing what to do after high school can feel like a big decision. With so many colleges, universities, programs, careers, and pathways available, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

That’s why post-secondary career fairs are so important.

Career fairs give students an opportunity to meet representatives from colleges, universities, trades, apprenticeship programs, employers, and other organizations—all in one place. More importantly, they give you the chance to ask questions, explore your options, and discover what you need to do before it’s time to apply.

Don’t Just Walk Around—Ask Questions

One of the biggest mistakes students can make at a career fair is being too shy to speak up.

Remember: you are there to learn.

Representatives expect students to have questions. You don’t need to know exactly what career you want or what program you will choose. In fact, that’s one of the reasons career fairs are so valuable.

Walk up to a representative and start a conversation.

Ask:

  • What programs do you offer in this field?
  • What high school courses are required?
  • What grades or prerequisites do I need?
  • Are there specific math, science, English, or other courses I should take?
  • Do I need volunteer experience, work experience, or a portfolio?
  • What does the application process look like?
  • When should I apply?
  • Are there different admission requirements for different programs?
  • What career opportunities are available after graduation?
  • Are there co-op, placement, apprenticeship, or internship opportunities?
  • What can I do now to prepare?

There is no such thing as a silly question when you are trying to make an informed decision.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

Another important thing to remember is that attending a career fair does not mean you have to choose your future that day.

You are exploring.

Maybe you think you want to become a nurse but discover an entirely different health-care career that interests you. Maybe you’re interested in engineering but learn about a skilled trade that offers the hands-on experience you enjoy. Maybe you have no idea what you want to do yet—and that’s okay too.

Career fairs are an opportunity to discover possibilities you may not have considered.

Be curious. Listen. Ask questions. Take notes.

You may learn something that changes your plans—or confirms that you’re already heading in the right direction. Either way, you’ll leave better informed.

And when the time comes to apply to college, you’ll be ready.
