SUPPLEMENTAL COURSE IN ORTHODONTIC PROCEDURES

Next Intake:

The course meets the RCDSO standards for a Supplemental Course in Intra-oral Procedures permitting your Certified Level II Dental Assistants to complete more expanded intra-oral functions and is taught by Board Certified Orthodontists.

 

Program Length
This program is conducted over a 2-day period (weekend)

Program Schedule
Orthodontic Level I – Saturday 9-4 pm

  • Includes hands-on skills clinic in the simulation lab and dental clinic.

Topics include: orthodontic theory and instrumentation, diagnosis of malocclusions, diagnostic records for orthodontic treatment planning, review of orthodontic appliances, current orthodontic procedures including direct orthodontic bonding (placement/cementing of bands, braces, passive space maintaining appliances), bracket/band positioning.

Orthodontic Level II – Sunday 9-4 pm

  • Includes hands-on skills clinic in the simulation lab and dental clinic; use of Itero digital scanner

Topics include: Class I/II/III correction and mechanics; Placement of attachments for orthodontics purposes in conjunction with clear aligner therapy, taking non-alginate conventional and digital impressions for working models for the fabrication of space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances, Removal of braces, bands, space-maintaining appliances (not removing cement/resin) & retention protocols.

Performances
The course adheres to the RCDSO guidelines to allow certified Level II dental assistants to perform 4 expanded intraoral duties which include:

  1. Bonding of braces and cementing passive banded appliances; removing braces and passive appliances — cannot remove resin with a handpiece and cannot tie in active archwires according to the RCDSO guidelines in Ontario but this may change in the future as their scope of practice expands further. The DA can remove passive archwires (for example when the patient returns after their adjustment appointment).
  2. Digital impressions
  3. Bonding aligner attachments intraorally
  4. Bonding lingual retainers

Please refer to the RCDSO Standard of Practice Page 4 (intraoral duties) and Page 8 (Appendix 1) for further information. Please note, dental hygienists can perform all duties including applying active forces to a tooth and removing resin under the supervision of a dentist or orthodontist.
